Handcrafted from start to finish using raw materials and steeped in tradition

Gill and Jon are the husband and wife team behind Sytch Farm Studios. After completing her degree in ceramics, Gill spent sixteen years in teaching. She then met Jon and was inspired to start making ceramics again. The pair soon found that their hobby had become a full-time job and so Sytch Farm Studios was born.

Gill's love of ceramics started as a child in Cornwall, the home of Cornish Stoneware Clay. She first used this clay at primary school and fell in love so much that she uses it in all her work today.

The clay is fine yet durable. It is first processed in a pugmill to ensure consistency. After being hand thrown on a potter's wheel the vessel is then left to harden, at which point it is flipped upside down and turned. It is then left to dry out through a process called 'greenware' and then biscuit fired slowly up to 1050 degrees centigrade. This turns the raw clay into ceramic. The pieces are then glazed by brushing or dipping and then fired again in temperatures up to 1260 degrees centigrade.

The results of this process are truly unique, artisan ceramics, every single time.
